What Does it Mean "to Find the Root Cause"

Have you ever had a nagging problem that doesn't seem too concerning, but doesn't seem to warrant a doctor visit? Yet it bugs you enough that you want to figure out what is causing your symptoms because you just don't feel healthy.

You finally decide to see the doctor. You tell them your symptoms and how long or frequently you have been dealing with the problem. But then walk out of the office with no answers even after various tests are performed? Maybe the doctor gave you some medication but the problem persists. Does any of that sound familiar?

Let's try an analogy to describe conventional medicine vs functional medicine.

Let's take a potted tree for example. You see black spots all over the leaves. An effort is made to help heal this tree of whatever is ailing it. You make sure it has enough water, fertilize it, and even move it to a more sunny location. You met the needs of this tree for the right nutrition and environment but the spots on the leaves continue to get worse.

So you take the potted tree to a tree specialist (doctor). They check the soil and ask questions on how well it is being nourished and nurtured. All the tests come back normal, and you still have no answers. You are given a different fertilizer (medicine) to try. This seems to help make the spots smaller and lighter, but it's obvious it hasn't fixed the root problem.

Sound familiar?

Now Let's Talk about a Functional Medicine Approach

You hear about functional medicine, which seeks to find the root cause to problems before treating. You decide to give it a try. This functional provider runs some new tests that weren't an option at the doctor's office.

This test detects cracks in the planter and with a new analysis of the soil soon finds out the soil was invaded by a pest that has been feeding off of the roots. The provider offers a new fertilizer (supplement) that can kill off the pest and provide more specialized nutrition support that the tree needs.

Weeks or months later, the black spots on the leaves are starting to fade and is looking stronger than ever before!

This story may be fictional. I'm not a professional in plant health, perhaps a pest eating at the roots would never cause black spots on the leaves. Regardless, my hope is that you can see through this analogy the conventional approach to healthcare is not finding the root cause of the problems you may be having. But rather, it's simply managing symptoms not working at healing the root cause of what is causing the symptoms.

At Serenity Nutrition, the goal is to dig deep using functional lab work and your symptoms to begin small steps to your healing journey for a better, healthier quality of life.
